New iPHONE left at bar?

I recently read an article on MSNBC about an iPhone found at a bar. Yes I know cell phones are left at bars every night. However this cell phone was not your ordinary device. Apparently this was the "new" iPhone supposedly to hit stores in June 2010.They believe this is the new iPhone because the bar it was left in is Redwood City, only 20 miles from Apple headquarters. Apparently Apple has not responded to these reports. I've asked many friends what is so great about this new iPhone and I was told it is just better. Ill take their word for it. While reading the article they described the phone as being bulkier but able to do all the same functions. The reason for the bulkiness is because of the larger battery. The mystery still remains if this actually is the new iPhone. I think it is safe to say that there is somebody out there very upset because they lost some very important equipment.

VS Pink Nation Member

As I mentioned in my pervious post, Victoria's Secrets PINK Collection is having a contest for Universities to win a PINK Part at their school. The contest is down to two schools, Rutgers and West Virginia University. To nominate your favorite just go on to this website and vote. I think this is a great idea for Victoria's Secret to do. They will have famous bands playing all day. I would love for this to have happen at our school, or even at a nearby school. VSPink Twitter account is constantly giving updates of the winner. When you go to the website they have a clock count down as well.

I think that VSPINK is doing a great job with social media. I just became part of PINK nation and hopefully I will be receiving some prizes with their contest giveaways. On their website they interacted with Facebook as well letting people become friends with them. They are interacting with their customers and really getting their product image out to the public. By having a Twitter account and Facebook page is only connecting them even more with the younger generation, and that's what PINK nation is all about.

John Dawe Visits Class

In our last class we had a guest speaker named John Dawe. He recently worked at Solid Cactus but now has his own business called Dawe Consulting Group. One of the tasks he mentioned to us that he recently completed was a political campaign for Judge Tina Polachek Gartley. When she decided to run for Judge social media was just coming out of the wood works. Not many political campaigns were focusing on Facebook or Twitter announcements. John decided that this would be a great way to gather a whole new crowd of voters through Facebook and Twitter. He would post reminders on her Facebook page letting them know where she was speaking and when they could vote. They had over 1000 friends on Facebook. He also did the same thing with Twitter, posting updates and pictures. This helped her campaign out tremendously because it was cheap and easy to do. I think using social networking for political campaigns is a great way to let your fans know when exactly to vote and what she stands for. People use the computer every day and this is just one more was to get the message sent across. In the end Tina Gartley did win the election and John even said, his social campaign was a huge factor in the end results.

First Glance with VsPINK

VsPINK on Twitter definitely takes Twit Pics to a whole new level. This is one of the reasons why I like this Twitter page so much. Not only do they make tweets every day but they post pictures of their new and upcoming items. For instance, one of the tweets was "First look at the new push-up strapless w/lace that converts 7 ways! Available in stores 3/30." They also posts pictures of the new PINK collection about to hit stores. Being a follower of VsPINK really gives me the capabilities to see clothing that no one else gets to see. That is what I do with most of my time on VsPINK twitter page is look up new clothing items. It then will give me a link to where I can buy them, and they normally have special offers.

This site also has new contests almost every week. Last week it was having a million members on their page and receiving a free t-shirt. This week their contest is to invite 2 of your friends to join PINK nation, and you get to pick four free bracelets.

If giving away free stuff for joining a site isn't good enough, then I do not know what is. They certainly are on the top of their game.

How To Get A Break

Last class we discussed the proper way a company should handle a crisis. There were certain companies that have had some bad press, and maybe this could have been avoided if they were prepared. For instance, Toyota recently had a major crisis where in certain car models their pedal was getting stuck. There was a recall, but it was not soon enough because the press took a field day with the problem. Their apology was not sympathetic and it did not seem genuine, which also could have been a factor to bad press.

Another company that had some bad press was Nestle. It was found out that Nestle is "destroying" the rain forest for palm oil. The organization of Green Peace even posted their rendition of a Kit-Kat commercial, where the Kit-Kat is an orang-utan's finger.
Here is the video that Green Peace Posted:

Nestle however did not come out with any official statement. People on Facebook even became fans of the Nestle page just so they could write horrible comments to the company. They eventually took down the comments. I personally think that they should have made a video of an apology, and also comment saying they have many projects where they are actually helping the world, not hurting it.

All these companies that failed in alerting the community could have done several things. First they need to have a speech prepared. They need someone to talk to the public who is informed and someone who is believable. They also need to use every media outlet that they can, so the people know what the problem is as soon as possible. That way the people can know the truth, and not what the media makes of it.

It is very important to have a plan when dealing with any crisis. It can save a lot of bad backlash, and possibly any loss of business.

Guest Speaker from The Weekender

In our last class we had a guest speaker come in from The Weekender and talk to us about what his job requires. Chris, or as he likes to call himself and others Peter Parker deals with all of social media for the company. Chris works on The Weekender's website as well as creating the Facebook page and Twitter account. Before he started to work at The Weekender they did not have a Facebook page or A Twitter account. Now they have several hundred members belonging to those accounts. He mentioned that having these accounts is a great way for people to follow news stories and to stay connected. He also created a Youtube page that concentrates on live video streams on musicians or people backstage at a concert. He is then able to use Google Analytics to see who is checking what and for how long. This will then give him a good idea about what people are looking for.

Here is an a musician that the Weekender taped and Posted it online to their Youtube Account- On this website you can watch interviews and even listen to music.
The Weekender on YouTube

Technology is changing everyday and there is always something new out there. Chris said he is constantly looking up new Iphone apps that could help him out in his business as well as learning new ways to improve social media for The Weekender. I believe that this is one of the reasons why The Weekender is so popular in this area because it lets people from everyone be able to see the content right away. It also allows for interaction and be able to sit and watch videos, rather than reading the actual paper.
